Dell launched the G series of gaming laptops in India sometime back. The Dell G7 7500 laptop is one of the high-end models and comes at a starting price of over 1 lakh. Here is our review of the device.

The Dell G7 7500 has got a sober, very professional look with an overall matte finish; the top and bottom parts of the chassis, the top lid of the display, the hinge, everything has a matte finish. The laptop comes in only one colour variant: Anodized Mineral Black. The fingerprints and light smudges don’t leave a noticeable trace on the body of the laptop, except for the touchpad. DellBatterie The G7 7500 is a bit on the heavy side, weighing more than 2.5 kg. It, however, does not look like a conventional gaming laptop and if you switch off the RGB lighting.

Our review unit had a 6-core 10th Generation Intel Core i7–10750H processor coupled with 16GB DDR4 2933 MHz (dual-channel) RAM and comes with a 6GB NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 graphics card. The laptop runs Windows 10 Home and has a 1TB (M.2 2280, PCIe NVMe Gen3 x4) SSD.

The laptop comes with these ports: one USB 3.2 Gen 1 port with PowerShare, two USB 3.2 Gen 1 ports, one combined port for headphone and microphone, one HDMI 2.0 port, one power-adapter port, one Thunderbolt 3 (USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C) port, one Mini DisplayPort and one RJ-45 Killer Networks E2500V2 Gigabit Ethernet port.

The Dell G7 7500 sports a 300Hz 15.6-inch full HD display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. 300Hz is a quite high refresh rate for a laptop screen, considering the low-end gaming laptops start with a 60Hz panel and then you see ones with 120Hz and 144Hz at the upper end of the price spectrum. This one is a 300Hz one, mind you. Dell XPS 15 9510 Laptop Battery You would expect each drag of the mouse pointer, every click to be super smooth, every drag and drop like how a gel pen sort of glides on a glossy sheet of paper, with just the requisite amount of friction and a major amount of control, and it is exactly like that. Scrolling up and down the pages to read articles or see photographic content is very smooth and the image quality also appears crispy, with just the right amount of colours, no accentuations anywhere. Also, the display is anti-glare, with 100% sRGB 100% and 300 nits of brightness.

All the praise aside, the display couldn’t be called one of the strong suits of the laptop when speaking mainly about the sturdiness of the panel and how it is attached to the chassis. It is thin, it is light, takes some grams away from the weight of the gaming laptop and gives a workstation-like look to the laptop. But there are some potential shortcomings too if we focus only on how safe the display is going to be when moving the laptop around or even opening or closing the lid.

Although the display panel attaches quite securely at the hinge and the small size of the hinge reduces the weight of the laptop, it also leaves the display panel a tad vulnerable to damage through twisting or breaking. The thin display and the small hinge could account for some accidental damage to the screen if you are not careful enough when tilting the screen. Users should be very careful when opening or closing the laptop physically and when carrying it.

There are three default performance modes you could run this laptop on: Balanced, Dell and High Performance. Dell XPS 13 9380 Laptop Battery These can be found under ‘Power Management’ in the ‘FX’ option found in the Alienware Command Centre.

We played Killing Floor 2 on the highest possible settings (Ultra) first and on Balanced mode. The fan noise was a bit loud during the initial 10–15 minutes of the game and then it became less noticeable as we progressed. The melee and the ranged action felt very smooth with very less drop in the frame rates as we hacked and shot our way through the waves upon waves of zombie hordes. So, gameplay-wise, there was not any kind of lag or tear. But after about just 30 minutes of gaming, the upper part of the chassis including the top half of the keyboard got very warm and the part above the keyboard, too hot. Also, the top left portion of the keyboard also heated up. Within an hour of gaming at Ultra settings, the keyboard had literally become ‘too hot to handle’.

We tried the game at lower settings and this time too, the heating did not lessen. The fan noise was not that much bothersome at Balanced and Dell modes but the heat dissipation isn’t very effective.

We shut the game down and due to slow heat dissipation, the high temperature of the keyboard came down only after 10 minutes of closing the game window.

Dell has provided a broad touchpad that occupies the bottom central part of the chassis. The touchpad response is quite fluid. Also, the left and right keys lie inside the flat surface of the touchpad without any raised partition to visibly differentiate them; that leaves you with more space for manoeuvering your finger, which is always a plus.

The audio response of the laptop is impressive. Dell Inspiron 15 5501 Laptop Battery The laptop is able to emanate the game sounds quite effectively: it is loud enough for your man-cave and the atmospheric details are also rendered clearly ( everything at full volume). We even listened to a bit of Coldplay and The Verve, just on YouTube, and liked the sound output. It came out full, rich and didn’t have the flaky sound which some laptops give when on speakers.

At Balanced and Dell power management modes, with the keyboard and the strip lighting switched off, the laptop was able to give a battery backup of about 3–4 hours when using it for tasks like using Google Docs for almost the entire time, playing some music and watching videos on YouTube for about 45 minutes, emailing etc.

All the cavilling aside regarding poor heat dissipation and the probable vulnerability of the display to physical damage, the Dell G7 7500 is a premium gaming machine, good for those who do not want to give away from their machine that they are gamers. It can double up as a great work laptop. It has got sober, neat, workstation-like looks, has a great 300Hz anti-glare display and a quite impressive audio output. The battery life is also long and can stretch on for about 4 hours when doing light tasks. Gaming is a breeze on this laptop though the heat dissipation could have been better. Again, the hinge design could be a matter of concern for those who can be quite indolent when it comes to using the laptop carefully. The laptop can run high-end games well, but at the price point of above Rs 1 lakh, the heat dissipation of the device could have been a lot more efficient.

If you are looking to buy a premium gaming machine that can both game and work well at the office provided you exercise care in opening and closing the screen, the Dell G7 7500 will give you some reasons to be happy, but if you want a device for purely gaming purposes, this might not be a perfect choice.
